High-end Fashion Firm

BACKGROUND
The Prima Jiva is a High-end fashion firm based in Walnut Creek, California, and was founded by Salma Schempp in 2008. All clothing is produced in the San Francisco Bay Area. Inspired by nature's aesthetics blended with Eastern philosophy, Prima Jiva is a unique collection of stylish woman’s apparel with an international flair that combines versatility, comfort and timeless elegance, using high quality eco friendly fabrics.

Salma Schempp (Designer) is an American citizen born in Kabul, Afghanistan. For many years a lover of both fashion and travel, Salma has been influenced by women in cosmopolitan centers, resort areas and in the humblest of situations who adorn themselves creatively in flowing, comfortable garments. In 2008 Salma decided to launch her own clothing collection that embraces her passion of art. Salma’s first show was a success and featured only 8 designs. It was held at her own home to a small group of people. She sold 28 pieces that night.

CHALLENGES
The Fashion Industry, being as competitive as it is, can be a difficult one to navigate through. Without a business background, Salma was stalled in her marketing efforts and applied to the Contra Costa Small Business Development Center for assistance.

ACTIONS
SBDC advisor, Jon Erlandson, used his extensive retail clothing background to help Salma create a business plan and define her customer. With his help, she developed an effective marketing plan that used participation in exclusive charitable events to access her target customers and to secure local boutique business relationships. With a solid plan and early success, they felt ready to seek investor funding.

Salma also enrolled in JFK University’s Certificate Program in Entrepreneurial in order to gain a greater knowledge in the business world. JFKU and CCSBDC collaborated in the development of the certificate program

RESULTS
After overcoming mass competition and working through economic struggles, Salma’s firm has reached new heights. With now over 40 pieces (and a new collection in the making) Prima Jiva is being sold in spas, resorts and 18 exclusive boutiques throughout the United States.

Through collaboration with local and global charities Prima Jiva has created a buzz in the San Francisco fashion world and continues to astonish buyers.
This success has allowed two local investors to see the potential and invest in the business. Prima Jiva has recently hired an administrative assistant as their first employee.
